Secrets of hidden gardens
Take a look inside hidden gardens of beautiful houses of captains on the coast of Orebić and discover their secrets. The secret is in the plants that the famous sea captains brought home from their travels and planted in their gardens. Orebić was named after an aristocratic Orebić family – renowned sea captains, and was founded in the late 15th century on the territory of the Republic of Ragusa. Kiss me… I’m from Nakovana
Meet Nakovana – one of the oldest villages on Pelješac, which, according to archaeological findings was inhabited as early as 6000 BC. In the cave Spila Nakovana, archaeologists found an Illyrian fertility sanctuary. There, before a phallic stalagmite, mysterious rites were held. Many inhabitants of coastal villages originally lived in Nakovana – in the inland region where they were safe from pirate attacks. According to legend, there were three blacksmith brothers. One day, they decided to divide their property. One brother got a small house – “kućište“ – in which he lived and which he used as a smithy. Therefore, the nearby place got the name “Kućište“. Touch the sky
Early spring and fall are the best time to climb the highest peak of Pelješac, St. Ilia, from which you can see Italy when the bora blows. Because of its height and secludedness, it is one of the widest and most beautiful viewpoints in Croatia. Once on top, people realize how small they are in comparison with the magnificent nature and are thankful for being a part of it. St. Ilia’s peak is full of endemic species, medicinal plants and herbs, and especially wild orchids, which bloom in May and June. The easiest path starts from Nakovana and it will take you 2.5 hours to reach the peak. Sign the guestbook at the peak marked with a wooden cross and an inscribed marble slab, and enjoy the heavenly view.
Angels in your hair
If you want to feel angels in your hair and add a spiritual dimension to your travel, climb the hill above Orebić and visit the convent of Our Lady of the Angels!
